Wispr Flow Launches iOS Dictation App with 100+ Languages

Several major tech companies, including Meta, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, are investing heavily in voice-activated AI. Startup Wispr Flow aims to compete with these giants with its new iOS dictation app.

Supporting over 100 languages, Wispr Flow's iOS app functions as a keyboard, enabling voice typing in any app. This expands on their existing Windows and Mac applications.

Superior Speech-to-Text Experience

Wispr Flow offers a remarkably accurate dictation experience. Initial use may require minor edits, but the AI quickly learns and adapts, significantly improving accuracy. The app proves highly effective for composing emails, messages, and even long-form content.

The app includes a numeric and symbol keyboard for special characters. It also learns custom names and terms, with the option to add entries manually. A whisper mode allows for discreet dictation in quiet environments. Wispr Flow even claims robust performance in areas with poor network coverage.

Co-founder Tanay Kothari initially envisioned a wearable device for silent dictation. Last July, the company shifted focus to software, launching its Mac app a few months later.

iOS Integration and Future Plans

While desktop users can activate dictation with a hotkey, the iOS app requires users to switch keyboards. This presents a usability challenge Wispr Flow will need to address.

Wispr Flow offers a free tier with a 2,000-word weekly limit. An unlimited plan is available for $12 monthly or $144 annually, which also includes early access to new features. The company has raised $26 million in funding and boasts a 19% conversion rate to its paid subscription, with year-on-year revenue growth of 60%.

An Android app is planned for release later this year. Wispr Flow is also developing shared context functionality for teams, enabling the app to learn industry-specific terminology.

Competition and Differentiation

Wispr Flow faces competition from other dictation apps like Aqua, Talktastic, Superwhisper, and Betterdication. However, Kothari believes Wispr Flow's strong engineering team and long-term commitment to the technology will give them a competitive edge.
