X Outage: Platform Continues to Experience Bugs

X users are experiencing ongoing issues following a significant outage that began Thursday afternoon. Many report problems with core platform functionality, including messages failing to load, timelines not updating, and posts requiring page refreshes to appear.

Downdetector, a service that tracks website outages, recorded a surge in user reports starting around 2:12 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday. These reports detailed problems ranging from login difficulties to disappearing direct messages.

X's official Engineering account acknowledged the service degradation on Thursday, attributing it to a data center outage. The account stated the team was actively working to resolve the issue.

X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today. We are experiencing a data center outage and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.

Reports have emerged of a fire at an X-leased data center near Portland, Oregon, on Thursday. It remains unclear if this incident is connected to the ongoing platform issues.

This is not the first time X has experienced widespread outages. Previous major disruptions occurred in March 2025, December 2022, and July 2023. A more recent incident in May 2025 saw timelines briefly stop updating for many users.

Since Elon Musk acquired X (formerly Twitter) in 2022 for $44 billion, the company has undergone significant changes, including substantial workforce reductions. These cuts have reportedly impacted the engineering department, raising concerns about the platform's stability and maintenance.

Following Musk's acquisition, reports also surfaced regarding potential security vulnerabilities due to server misconfigurations, which could make the platform susceptible to denial-of-service attacks.

Users continue to report problems, and it remains to be seen when full functionality will be restored. The ongoing issues highlight the challenges X faces in maintaining platform stability amidst organizational changes and potential infrastructure problems.
