YouTube Tests New Livestream Engagement Leaderboard

YouTube is experimenting with a new way to boost engagement during livestreams. The platform is testing an engagement leaderboard, gamifying the viewing experience and encouraging more interaction.

This leaderboard ranks viewers based on their "XP" or experience points. Points are earned through various interactions, such as comments, Super Chats, Super Stickers, and gifts sent during the livestream.

How the Leaderboard Works

Viewers earn points for engaging with the livestream. A crown icon at the top of the chat displays their earned points. Clicking the icon reveals the leaderboard showcasing the top 50 most engaged viewers on that channel.

The top three viewers receive a special badge next to their name during the livestream, increasing their visibility to the creator and other viewers.

Viewers earn points for engaging with streams and will see a crown icon at the top of the chat with the points they've earned. When they click on the crown icon, they'll be taken to the leaderboard to see the top 50 most engaged viewers on that channel.

This feature aims to incentivize interaction and potentially increase purchases of YouTube's add-on chat features like Super Chat and Super Stickers. Creators also benefit by receiving a portion of the revenue from these purchases.

Initial Testing Phase

YouTube is currently testing this feature with a small group of viewers. Users can opt out of appearing on the leaderboard if they prefer.

While the ranking system might seem simple, it leverages a competitive element, particularly relevant for gaming livestreams, which comprise a significant portion of YouTube's live content. This gamified approach could effectively drive more interaction and revenue for both YouTube and creators.
