Disney has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Google, alleging "massive" copyright infringement through the tech giant's Gemini AI models. The entertainment behemoth claims Google is commercially distributing unauthorized images and videos of its iconic characters, a move that coincides with Disney's new partnership with OpenAI.
According to the letter, which was seen by Variety, Disney accuses Google of operating "as a virtual vending machine," capable of reproducing, rendering, and distributing its valuable copyrighted characters and other works on a mass scale. The letter further alleges that many of these infringing images, generated by Google's AI Services, are branded with the Gemini logo, falsely implying Disney's authorization and endorsement of Google's exploitation of its intellectual property.
The cease-and-desist letter specifically cites infringement of characters from popular franchises such as "Frozen," "The Lion King," "Moana," "The Little Mermaid," and "Deadpool." Google has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations.
This legal challenge against Google comes on the very same day that Disney announced a significant three-year, $1 billion deal with OpenAI. This partnership will allow OpenAI's Sora AI video generator to feature Disney's beloved characters, highlighting a contrasting approach to AI integration for the entertainment giant.
