Uber Eats is set to revolutionize food delivery in the UK through a new partnership with Starship Technologies, deploying autonomous sidewalk robots for last-mile service. The collaboration marks a significant step in expanding robot-powered deliveries, initially launching in select UK cities before a wider European and US rollout.
Autonomous Deliveries Launching in the UK
The innovative service will commence in December, targeting specific merchants in the vibrant cities of Leeds and Sheffield. Following its UK debut, Uber Eats plans to extend these robot delivery services to additional European markets by 2026, with a further expansion into the United States slated for 2027.
Uber's Expanding Autonomous Fleet Strategy
This agreement with Starship Technologies represents the latest in a series of strategic alliances Uber has forged with various autonomous vehicle companies. While Starship is a prominent new partner, it is not Uber Eats' first foray into sidewalk robot delivery. Uber's food delivery platform has previously utilized robots from Serve Robotics for several years in the U.S., and also began deploying Avride's sidewalk robots earlier this year.
Starship Technologies' Global Reach
Starship Technologies boasts an impressive global fleet of nearly 3,000 six-wheeled delivery robots, operating across more than 270 different locations worldwide. These advanced robots are designed for efficient, short-distance deliveries, typically completing orders in under 30 minutes and covering distances of no more than two miles.
