Resolve AI, an artificial intelligence startup founded by former Splunk executives, has achieved a $1 billion valuation following its Series A funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company specializes in developing an autonomous site reliability engineer (SRE) tool designed to automatically maintain complex software systems.
While the headline valuation for the Series A round stands at $1 billion, sources familiar with the deal indicate that the company's actual blended valuation was lower due to a multi-tranched investment structure. This increasingly popular approach for highly sought-after AI startups allows investors to purchase some equity at a higher valuation while acquiring the remainder, often a larger portion, at a reduced price.
Leadership and Background
Founded less than two years ago, Resolve AI is spearheaded by Spiros Xanthos, a former Splunk executive, and Mayank Agarwal, Splunk's former chief architect for observability. Their professional partnership spans two decades, originating from their graduate studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This venture marks their second collaboration; they previously co-founded Omnition, a startup acquired by Splunk in 2019.
Automating Site Reliability Engineering
Resolve AI addresses a critical industry challenge by automating tasks traditionally handled by human SREs. While human SREs manually troubleshoot and resolve system failures, Resolve AI's platform autonomously identifies, diagnoses, and resolves production issues in real time. This automation is crucial as software systems grow more complex and distributed across cloud infrastructures, making it difficult for companies to find and retain enough skilled SREs.
By automating these essential functions, Resolve AI aims to significantly reduce downtime, lower operational costs, and free up engineering teams to focus on innovation and developing new features, rather than constantly managing production issues.
Financials and Competition
The startup's annual recurring revenue (ARR) is reported to be approximately $4 million, according to two individuals familiar with the company's financials. The specific size of the Series A funding round was not disclosed.
Last October, Resolve AI successfully raised a $35 million seed round. This initial funding was led by Greylock, with notable participation from World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li and Google DeepMind scientist Jeff Dean.
Resolve AI operates in a competitive landscape, with a key rival being Traversal. Traversal, another AI SRE startup, recently secured a $48 million Series A round led by Kleiner Perkins, with additional investment from Sequoia.
Resolve AI and Lightspeed Venture Partners did not respond to requests for comment regarding the funding round.
