Google's advanced AI, Gemini, is now rolling out globally to Android Auto, replacing the existing Google Assistant. This integration allows drivers to leverage sophisticated voice commands for a more natural, conversational interaction, enabling them to manage complex tasks seamlessly while on the road. The rollout, which began Thursday, targets Android Auto users who have already upgraded to Gemini on their smartphones.

Android Auto, a smartphone projection technology integrated into millions of vehicles, runs as an app on a user's phone, wirelessly communicating and projecting features like navigation, music, and messaging to the car's display.

This transition is part of Google's broader strategy to integrate Gemini across all its devices and platforms, a move first announced in May 2025, confirming Gemini's arrival in Android Auto this year.

Enhanced In-Car Capabilities with Gemini

Gemini significantly enhances in-car navigation and information access. Drivers can now ask specific questions about businesses along their route, such as finding a dog-friendly restaurant with a popular dish or locating an open barbecue spot near their destination. Gemini can then provide detailed information about these establishments.

Communication is also streamlined. Gemini allows users to reply to messages, summarize texts, and even translate messages into different languages before sending them. For instance, a driver could instruct Gemini to inform a friend about traffic delays and update their estimated time of arrival.

For productivity, Gemini provides convenient access to Gmail. Users can ask Gemini to locate specific information within their emails, such as a hotel address for navigation, or request a summary of unread messages, all hands-free.

Entertainment options are also improved. Gemini can curate personalized playlists from streaming services like YouTube Music and Spotify based on specific requests, such as an upbeat, family-friendly road trip playlist of a certain duration.

Furthermore, drivers can engage Gemini in open-ended conversations by saying, "Hey Google, let's chat." This feature allows for brainstorming ideas, learning new facts – like a virtual tour guide for a city – or even seeking advice, such as gift ideas for a wedding rehearsal dinner.

Availability and Access

The global rollout of Gemini on Android Auto commenced Thursday, November 20, 2025, supporting 45 languages. To activate Gemini, users must have the Gemini app installed on their smartphone. Once available, a tooltip will appear on the car's display, and interaction can be initiated by saying "Hey Google," pressing the mic button on the car screen, or long-pressing the voice control button on the steering wheel.
