Google is rolling out a significant new test designed to streamline the artificial intelligence experience within its Search platform. This global initiative merges AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries appearing at the top of search results, with AI Mode, its conversational chat interface. The goal is to allow users to seamlessly transition from receiving quick AI insights to engaging in deeper, interactive conversations, a move that intensifies Google's competition in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Previously, users seeking AI-powered interactions had to consciously decide whether to use a traditional search query or navigate to the dedicated AI Mode tab. This often meant pre-determining the nature of their information-seeking journey. If a simple answer was expected, the standard search bar sufficed. However, for more complex inquiries or when anticipating follow-up questions, users would switch to AI Mode to initiate a chat with Google's Gemini AI, an experience akin to using platforms like ChatGPT.

AI Mode, which launched to U.S. users this May and globally this August, enables back-and-forth chats with Gemini. The new test eliminates the previous friction. Now, after receiving an AI Overview – the concise, AI-generated snapshot of key information presented above organic search results – users can immediately delve deeper. A conversational interface will allow them to ask follow-up questions directly from the same screen, fostering a more intuitive and continuous information discovery process.

Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, announced the test in a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the company's vision for a more intuitive search experience.

(1/2) Today we’re starting to test a new way to seamlessly go deeper in AI Mode directly from the Search results page on mobile, globally.

This brings us closer to our vision for Search: just ask whatever’s on your mind – no matter how long or complex – and find exactly what you… pic.twitter.com/mcCS7oT2FI

Stein further clarified, "You shouldn’t have to think about where or how to ask your question." He explained that users will continue to receive an AI Overview as a helpful starting point, but will then be able to ask conversational follow-up questions in AI Mode directly from the same screen. This, he noted, "brings us closer to our vision for Search: just ask whatever’s on your mind – no matter how long or complex – and find exactly what you need."

This strategic enhancement comes as the competition in the AI sector heats up. Rival OpenAI is reportedly in "Code Red" mode, prioritizing improvements to its chatbox experience and delaying other product launches. Google's Gemini AI has seen substantial growth, reaching over 650 million monthly users as of November. By seamlessly integrating AI Mode with AI Overviews, a feature boasting 2 billion monthly users, Google aims to significantly boost Gemini's consumer adoption and solidify its position against competitors.

While this new functionality is being rolled out to users globally, it is currently limited to mobile devices. The test, announced on Monday, signifies Google's commitment to refining the user experience and making AI more accessible and integrated into everyday search.
