Many online daters on Hinge face the common frustration of receiving profile likes without any follow-up conversation, often leading to awkward silence or generic small talk. To address this, Hinge has rolled out "Convo Starters," an AI-powered feature designed to help users initiate more meaningful interactions and move beyond uninspired opening lines.

This new AI feature aims to inspire confidence and provide personalized guidance for sending initial messages. When a user expresses interest in another profile, Hinge will now display three tailored conversation tips directly beneath each photo and prompt. The underlying artificial intelligence analyzes the potential match's profile content, generating recommendations specific to their displayed interests or prompts. For instance, if a profile picture shows someone playing chess, Hinge might suggest starting a conversation about board games or strategic thinking.

Hinge developed Convo Starters in direct response to user feedback, recognizing a significant barrier to forming connections. The company's research highlights that a substantial 72% of Hinge daters are more likely to consider a match when a like is accompanied by a message. Furthermore, internal data reveals that users who include a comment with their likes are twice as likely to secure a date, underscoring the feature's potential to boost successful matches.

This launch marks Hinge's continued investment in AI-driven solutions for online dating. It follows the introduction of its Prompt Feedback feature, which uses AI to assess user-generated prompts and offer personalized advice on how to make them more engaging and detailed.

However, Hinge's increasing integration of AI features into the dating experience comes amidst growing user apprehension. A Bloomberg Intelligence survey indicates that many users, particularly Gen Z, feel uncomfortable with the idea of using AI for tasks like drafting profile prompts or crafting message responses, showing more unease than older generations.

Despite these concerns, Match Group, Hinge's parent company, is clearly committed to advancing AI in dating apps, allocating approximately $20 million to $30 million towards its various AI initiatives.
