Lux Capital, a prominent 25-year-old venture capital firm renowned for its strategic investments in frontier science and defense technology, has successfully closed its ninth fund, securing an impressive $1.5 billion. This latest fund marks the largest in the firm's history, significantly boosting its total assets under management (AUM) to $7 billion.
The achievement comes despite a challenging landscape for venture fundraising, with PitchBook projecting 2025 to mark a 10-year low for the number of new VC funds raised in the U.S. However, Lux Capital's consistent track record of identifying and backing transformative technologies has continued to attract limited partners.
Strategic Bets in Defense Technology
Lux Capital demonstrated remarkable foresight by investing in defense technologies years before geopolitical shifts transformed the sector into one of the most sought-after investment categories. The firm was a seed-stage investor in Anduril, a defense technology company last valued at $30.5 billion. Another key investment is Applied Intuition, an autonomous vehicle startup that has secured contracts with the Pentagon and was valued at $15 billion this year.
Early Leadership in AI Innovation
Beyond defense, Lux Capital also made prescient early bets on artificial intelligence (AI) startups well before the industry's explosive growth post-ChatGPT. Its early-stage AI investments include leading companies like Hugging Face and Runway AI. Notably, the firm also backed MosaicML, which was acquired by Databricks for $1.3 billion in 2023, underscoring Lux's ability to identify high-potential AI ventures.
Proven Track Record of Significant Exits
In addition to being early movers in defense tech and AI trends, Lux Capital has realized substantial returns from its portfolio. These include a significant exit from AI drug discovery company Recursion Pharmaceuticals, which went public in 2021. Another notable success was the sale of Auris Health, a pioneer in surgical robotics, to Johnson & Johnson for up to $6 billion in 2019. These successful exits highlight Lux Capital's strategic acumen and its capacity to generate considerable value for its investors.
