Poly, a startup with backing from the prestigious Y Combinator accelerator, has relaunched its platform, pivoting to become a cloud-hosted file storage system enhanced with advanced AI search capabilities. This new iteration allows users to effortlessly search through a wide array of content formats, including text, images, audio, and video, promising a more intuitive and efficient way to manage digital assets.
The relaunch positions Poly in a growing market where AI models are increasingly used to power natural language search, helping users find files and information faster. While several companies already offer services to connect and search across different platforms, Poly distinguishes itself by encouraging users to consolidate all their files into a single location, making them instantly queryable.
A Strategic Pivot from 3D Asset Generation
This marks Poly's second major product phase. Founded in 2022 by Abhay Agarwal and Sam Young (who has since departed), the startup initially focused on enabling users to create 3D assets using prompts. However, founder Abhay Agarwal, a research fellow at Microsoft with a background in vision AI, noted that the team hadn't anticipated the rapid explosion and intense competition within the AI image and asset generation industry.
“We interviewed our users and asked them what the pain points of their workflows were that could be solved by AI. Turned out that one big unmet need for users was organizing their file system. As a user, you have a lot of files on your computer, and it is hard to find stuff. We wanted to solve for that,” Agarwal explained.
This realization led to a strategic pivot. Poly shut down its previous iteration in 2023, entered a stealth development phase, and began building the new cloud-based file organizer. After several months of closed beta testing, the product is now publicly available on the web and Mac, with a Windows version slated for future release. The company is commencing user onboarding from its waitlist immediately.
Funding and Key Features
Poly has successfully raised $8 million in seed funding. This round was led by Felicis, with significant participation from Bloomberg Beta, NextView, Figma Ventures, AI Grant, and Wing Ventures, and includes a prior $3.9 million round secured in 2022.
James Cham, a partner at early-stage investment firm Bloomberg Beta, commented on Poly's vision:
“File systems are incredibly powerful and elegant, but most people have forgotten about them. Poly is bringing file systems as the center of interaction. The tool is designed in a way that allows you to use AI to think in a clearer way.”
At its core, Poly functions as a cloud storage solution with a robust AI-powered search engine. It supports a wide range of file types, including text, PDFs, office documents, images, audio, video, and web files (URLs). Beyond simple storage, users can upload files, tag them, ask the AI assistant questions, and even request summaries or translations. The tool also intelligently organizes files, capable of creating new folders or renaming existing ones as needed.

Competitive Landscape and Future Vision
Poly enters a competitive arena, directly challenging established players like Dropbox and Google Drive, both of which offer their own search tools. The article’s author noted that Poly's search functionality performed better than Google's in their experience, highlighting an added benefit of easily generating summaries from YouTube video links.
Agarwal sees Poly as an upgrade to tools like Google's NotebookLM, which allows users to organize files for project insights. While Poly excels at file organization, it currently lacks access to the latest web knowledge or the ability to create audio or video content, areas where NotebookLM might have an edge.
One of Poly's most compelling advantages is its generous free tier, offering 100GB of storage—significantly more than many competing services. Users can also opt for a premium plan at $10 per month for 1TB of storage. While direct photo sync isn't available yet, future features could position Poly as a viable Google Photos alternative.
The company's roadmap includes several upcoming features: web search integration, in-app stylized report creation, a text and markdown editor, and custom metadata options. Future updates will also enable users to paste Google Docs links and leverage AI agents for calculations and analysis within spreadsheets.
Poly also supports collaborative workflows, allowing users to create shared drives, upload files, and invite others to query the content—a valuable feature for team projects. The startup plans to introduce direct sharing of individual files and folders as well.

Agarwal emphasizes that Poly's primary focus is on “Gen AI native creators and knowledge workers—people who are researching content or searching through their files. For instance, a service executive who wants to get insights out of many customer calls.”
For broader integration, Poly offers a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, enabling its use within other AI tools like ChatGPT or Cursor. While direct syncing with other services is not yet available, Agarwal notes that the app's support for virtual file references lays the groundwork for future file imports from various platforms.
