Google is rolling out an experimental, AI-powered feature for Search Console, enabling users to configure their Search results Performance reports using natural language prompts. This significant update aims to streamline data analysis, moving away from manual filter selection towards a more intuitive, conversational approach.
Dubbed AI-powered configuration, the new functionality translates plain-language requests into the appropriate filters and settings. This means webmasters and SEO professionals can simply describe the analysis they wish to perform, and the system will handle the technical setup, making complex data queries more accessible.
What the AI-Powered Configuration Offers
The experimental feature supports three primary types of report setup within Search Console's Performance reports:
1. Enhanced Filtering
Users can now narrow down data by various parameters—such as query, page, country, device, search appearance, or date range—using natural language. For instance, a request like, "Show me queries on phone searches that contain the word 'sports' in the last 6 months," will automatically apply the relevant filters, simplifying the process of segmenting data.
2. Simplified Comparisons
Setting up complex date range comparisons, which previously required meticulous manual configuration, can now be achieved with straightforward prompts. An example includes, "Compare traffic for my pages that contain '/blog' in this quarter to the same quarter last year," allowing for quick, insightful trend analysis.
3. Flexible Metric Selection
The AI feature also allows for the display of specific combinations of the four available metrics: Clicks, Impressions, Average CTR, and Average Position. Users can ask, "Show me the Average CTR and Average Position of my queries in Spain in the last 28 days," to get tailored performance insights.
Important Limitations to Note
Google has outlined several limitations for this experimental feature:
- It currently functions exclusively with Performance reports for Search results and does not support Discover or News reports.
- AI-powered configuration is designed solely for setting up filters, comparisons, and metrics; it cannot sort tables or export data.
- Users are advised to exercise caution, as the AI may occasionally misinterpret requests. It is crucial to review the suggested filters before proceeding with data analysis to ensure they accurately reflect the intended query.
Why This Update Matters for SEO Professionals
This new feature holds significant potential for reducing the manual effort involved in setting up intricate filter combinations within Google Search Console. The ability to request custom date comparisons or multi-filter configurations through natural language streamlines several steps in the reporting process, saving valuable time for SEO specialists and digital marketers.
However, the caveat regarding AI accuracy is particularly important for high-stakes reporting or client-facing data. Verifying that the AI has correctly interpreted your request before relying on the data for critical decisions is an essential step.
Looking Ahead
Google is initially rolling out this AI-powered configuration to a limited selection of websites, with plans for broader availability over time. A specific timeline for wider access has not yet been provided.
Users are encouraged to share their feedback through the dedicated buttons within Search Console or by posting in the Google Search Central Community, helping Google refine and improve the feature.
