Discord has unveiled a suite of new commerce features, allowing users to purchase digital in-game items, create wishlists, and send gifts directly within the platform. This strategic move aims to enhance the gaming experience while simultaneously opening new revenue streams for game developers, particularly as Discord reportedly prepares for a potential IPO.
Announced on Tuesday, these features eliminate the need for users to leave Discord to acquire digital goods, streamlining the purchasing process. Users can now browse and buy items, create personalized wishlists for desired game assets, and even send in-game items as gifts through direct messages.
The introduction of these commerce tools presents a significant monetization opportunity for both Discord and game developers. As Discord faces increased financial scrutiny ahead of a potential public offering, enabling developers to sell digital goods directly on the platform helps them reach a broader audience beyond their existing communities, potentially boosting their revenue.
The initial rollout of these features is in partnership with the popular video game Marvel Rivals. The game now boasts a dedicated store page directly within its official Discord server, offering players a seamless shopping experience.
The choice of Marvel Rivals for this launch is strategic, given its impressive performance since its release last year. The game attracted 10 million players within 72 hours, generated over $100 million in its first month, and has cultivated a robust community of more than 4 million members on Discord.
Players can now easily browse and purchase a variety of in-game items, including bundles, costumes, emotes, and emojis, directly from the Marvel Rivals server.
The wishlist functionality allows friends to view and purchase items for each other, making gift-giving simpler, especially with the holiday season approaching. Furthermore, the ability to send in-game items via DMs means users can gift friends even if they don't personally play Marvel Rivals, broadening the gifting possibilities.
Currently, the shop accepts U.S. currency and is accessible only on the desktop app for players in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Oceania. Discord has indicated plans to expand support for additional regions in the future.
