In a bold move to intensify its competition with rivals DoorDash and Uber Eats, food delivery giant Grubhub has announced a permanent waiver of delivery and service fees on all restaurant orders exceeding $50. This significant policy change, unveiled alongside its Super Bowl 2026 commercial, aims to deliver substantial cost savings for customers and enhance Grubhub's appeal in the fiercely competitive online food delivery market.
Grubhub's Permanent No-Fee Policy
Starting soon, customers placing restaurant orders over $50 will no longer incur any delivery or service charges. Grubhub states this is a permanent offering, designed to put more money back into customers' pockets during challenging economic times. The company estimates that delivery and service fees on orders over $50 typically average around $13 per transaction across various food delivery platforms.
This permanent fee elimination sets Grubhub apart in the food delivery space. Unlike DoorDash and Uber Eats, which generally offer limited-time promotions or tie fee waivers to paid subscription services like DashPass or Uber One (often with specific restaurant or order restrictions), Grubhub's new policy is a straightforward, ongoing benefit for larger orders.
Super Bowl Ad and Strategic Context
The initiative was launched with a high-profile Super Bowl 2026 advertisement featuring actor George Clooney. In the commercial, Clooney dramatically responds to the host's question, "Who will eat the fees?" with the definitive answer, "Grubhub will eat the fees."
This strategic shift comes as Grubhub navigates challenges in user growth and lags behind its primary competitors. According to marketing intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Grubhub, which was acquired by Marc Lore’s Wonder Group in 2024, saw its monthly active users decline by 20% year-over-year in 2025, reaching 8 million. In contrast, DoorDash currently boasts nearly 50 million monthly active users.
Broader Strategy: Acquisitions and Rewards
Further bolstering its strategy, Grubhub recently acquired Claim, a startup specializing in cash-back rewards at local restaurants. This acquisition aims to empower more restaurants to engage customers through personalized rewards programs, redeemable for both dine-in and pickup orders, complementing Grubhub's broader efforts to enhance customer value and restaurant partnerships.
