While Spotify users in the U.S. recently faced another subscription price hike, book enthusiasts have reason to celebrate. The streaming giant has announced significant expansions to its audiobook business, including a foray into physical book sales and innovative features designed to enhance the reading experience.
Spotify Ventures into Physical Book Sales
Spotify is making a notable pivot from its digital-only roots by enabling users in the U.S. and the UK to purchase physical copies of books directly through the app. This strategic move positions Spotify as a direct competitor to established booksellers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, aiming to become a comprehensive "one-stop shop" for book lovers.
The company has partnered with Bookshop.org, an online marketplace dedicated to supporting local, independent bookstores. This collaboration means that every physical book purchase made through Spotify will directly benefit local book communities, a significant win for indie booksellers.
The ability to buy physical books is set to roll out this spring. Users will find an "Add to your bookshelf at home" button on audiobook pages within the app. Clicking this button will direct them to Bookshop.org's website, which will manage all aspects of pricing, inventory, and shipping.
Introducing Page Match for Seamless Reading
To bridge the gap between physical and digital reading, Spotify is launching a new feature called "Page Match." This tool allows users to scan a page from a physical book using their phone camera, instantly syncing their progress to the exact corresponding spot in the audiobook.
Powered by a combination of Spotify's in-house and third-party computer vision and image scanning technologies, Page Match ensures a smooth transition between formats. Users can select the "Scan to Listen" button to switch to the audiobook or the "Scan to Read" button to return to their physical book, making it easy to pick up where they left off, whether at home or on the go.
Page Match is currently available to premium subscribers and will be rolled out to all audiobook users by late February. Initially, it supports most English-language titles, with plans for future expansion across the platform's catalog of over 500,000 titles.
Audiobook Recaps Expand to Android
Further enhancing the audiobook experience, Spotify is bringing "Audiobook Recaps" to Android devices this spring. Previously an iOS-only feature, Audiobook Recaps provide concise summaries tailored to the last section a user stopped listening to, helping them quickly re-engage with their story.
Growing Presence in the Audiobook Market
Since introducing audiobooks in September 2022, Spotify has seen substantial growth in this segment. The company reported in October 2025 that the number of users engaging with audiobooks increased by 36% over the past year, with listening hours rising by 37%. Moreover, over half of Spotify's 281 million premium subscribers have interacted with an audiobook, underscoring the platform's growing influence in the spoken-word content market.
Spotify is expected to release its fourth-quarter earnings results on February 10.
