Target is set to launch a beta version of its new shopping application on OpenAI's ChatGPT next week, marking a significant advancement in AI-powered retail. This on-platform app will allow customers to make multi-item purchases, buy fresh food products, and select from convenient fulfillment options including drive-up, in-store pick-up, or shipping, according to a recent press release.

The mass retailer announced that consumers will be able to receive personalized recommendations and complete purchases by linking their existing Target accounts with the app on ChatGPT. Further enhancements are planned for the ChatGPT application in the coming weeks, which will include the ability to link Target Circle accounts and offer same-day delivery as a fulfillment option.

Target's Strategic Vision for AI in Retail

Target's COO and incoming CEO, Michael Fiddelke, informed analysts during a recent earnings call that Target will be one of the first retailers on ChatGPT to offer such a comprehensive level of shopping flexibility.

"At Target, everything starts with the guest, and that means meeting them wherever they are, including emerging spaces like ChatGPT, where millions of consumers visit," said Prat Vemana, chief information and product officer at Target. "We're proud to be one of the first retailers bringing shopping into this new channel, partnering with OpenAI to make discovery through the Target app in ChatGPT as easy and joyful as browsing our aisles. Our goal is simple: make every interaction feel as natural, helpful and inspiring as chatting with a friend."

This initiative builds upon Target's existing integration of OpenAI technologies within its business operations. Vemana previously mentioned in an interview that the company had already been utilizing OpenAI's tools and had OpenAI train Target staff.

Expanding Conversational Commerce

The latest announcement underscores OpenAI's broader strategy to collaborate with retailers and brands to integrate commerce functionalities directly within ChatGPT. This trend is gaining momentum across the retail sector.

For instance, Walmart announced in October that it would integrate with ChatGPT's new commerce feature, Instant Checkout, which currently facilitates single-item purchases. This is part of a larger partnership, which also involves OpenAI developing an exclusive AI training certification for select Walmart employees.

The ChatGPT Instant Checkout function initially launched in September with Etsy and Shopify, available to U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users. Merchants are charged a fee on transactions, and ChatGPT noted that a retailer's enablement of Instant Checkout can influence its ranking in user search queries.

Context Amidst Business Challenges

Target's expansion into conversational commerce on ChatGPT comes amidst significant turnaround efforts for the retailer. The company has experienced a streak of declining sales, with its third-quarter results, also released recently, showing merchandise sales dropping by 1.9% and store comparable sales declining by 3.8%.
