The venture capital landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with founders increasingly holding the power in dealmaking. This dynamic change, moving away from the VC-dominated bear market of 2022-23, means that strategic partnerships and authentic relationships are more crucial than ever. Two prominent venture capitalists, Leslie Feinzaig of Graham & Walker and Ross Fubini of XYZ Venture, recently shared their insights on navigating this evolving market, offering tactical advice for both investors and founders on the "Build Mode" podcast.
VC Fundraising Dynamics: A Black Box for Investors
Raising capital isn't just a challenge for startups; VCs themselves face a complex "black box" when securing funds from Limited Partners (LPs). Just as portfolio companies must find their market fit, VCs need a robust go-to-market strategy to attract LPs and position themselves as worthwhile investments. This often requires VCs to effectively "sell themselves" as trustworthy partners to founders and sound investments to LPs.
Empathy Through Experience: Learning from Their Own Fundraises
Feinzaig and Fubini's own experiences in raising their initial funds have given them a unique empathy for the founder's fundraising journey. Feinzaig, for instance, entered venture capital with few industry connections, likening her first fundraise to "raising a gigantic angel round with no lead." She secured capital from 105 individual LPs, highlighting that without a prior track record, investors are primarily betting on the individual.
"If you don’t have a track record, then what they’re investing in is in you," Feinzaig stated.
This outsider perspective now allows her to serve as a trusted advisor, helping founders strategize before crucial board meetings.
Choosing the Right Partner: Fubini's Three Tenets
Ross Fubini similarly emphasizes the critical importance of choosing the right partners. His rubric for evaluating potential collaborations focuses on three core tenets: person, firm, and terms. Fubini stresses that the "person" is paramount, as founders will work with them for the long term.
"You work with this person forever. So it’s everything from like, are they fun? Do you trust them? Do they have the juice to get the deal done? It’s everything around this human," he advises.
The Market Shift: Founders in Control
Both VCs acknowledge the dramatic shift from the cautious 2022-23 bear market, where VCs held significant leverage, to the current environment characterized by eager dealmaking and increased founder power. This transition, they argue, makes the selection of the right VC partner even more vital for founders. Fubini describes this accelerated pace as "thrilling," noting that while due diligence remains essential, the ability to move quickly is "fun and joyful" compared to previous slower markets.
Beyond the Pitch Deck: Authentic Relationships and Execution
Feinzaig and Fubini offer a wealth of tactical advice for both sides: VCs seeking to capture founder attention and founders aiming to make the smartest choices for their cap tables. They concur that traditional pitch decks and cold emails have diminished power. Instead, cultivating authentic relationships and consistently demonstrating execution are the most effective strategies for attracting the right partners, whether you're a VC or a founder.
