Rocket Lab, a leading aerospace manufacturer and launch service provider, has secured its largest contract to date: an $816 million agreement with the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA). This significant award underscores the company's strategic pivot to diversify its business beyond its traditional "rocket company" identity, solidifying its role in the burgeoning defense space sector.
Announced on Friday, the prime contract awarded to Rocket Lab USA, a subsidiary, involves the design and manufacturing of 18 advanced satellites. These satellites are slated to be equipped with sophisticated missile warning, tracking, and defense sensors, forming a critical component of the SDA’s Tracking Layer Tranche 3 program.
This latest award builds upon an existing $515 million contract Rocket Lab holds with the SDA. That earlier agreement focuses on delivering satellites for the agency’s Transport Layer-Beta Tranche 2 program, which aims to establish a resilient satellite communications network in low Earth orbit. This network is designed to provide encrypted, low-latency data transmission capabilities essential for military operations. Combined, Rocket Lab's contracts with the SDA now exceed $1.3 billion.
Rocket Lab has been actively expanding its footprint in the defense sector, signaling its intent to bid for substantial Department of Defense initiatives. The company previously indicated its interest in multibillion-dollar projects such as Golden Dome, further highlighting its commitment to becoming a major player in military space technology. This strategic expansion is also reflected in its prior moves, including an acquisition aimed at bolstering its defense capabilities.
