On Me, a digital gift card startup founded by former Google employees, has successfully secured $6 million in a seed funding round. The company is poised to disrupt the traditional gift card industry with its innovative mobile-first platform, which enables users to purchase digital gift cards tailored to specific interests, moving beyond the limitations of single-retailer options.
The $6 million seed funding will be strategically deployed to significantly expand On Me's diverse range of gift categories. This expansion will introduce unique experiences such as horseback riding lessons, wine tastings, and theme park trips, broadening the scope of personalized gifting. The round was led by NFX, with notable participation from Lerer Hippeau and Focal. This latest investment follows a $1.7 million pre-seed round raised a year prior, coinciding with the platform's initial launch.
On Me emphasizes its notable flexibility. For example, a friend passionate about tennis can receive a digital card allowing them to choose outfits and gear from popular brands such as Wilson, On, and Prince. The platform currently offers gift cards across 72 diverse categories, spanning activities from running and reading to camping, gardening, gaming, and concerts.
Adding a layer of personalization, users can attach video messages, photos, and GIFs to their digital gift cards. On Me is accessible via its dedicated website, as well as its iOS and Android applications.
Beyond convenience, On Me is also addressing the significant environmental issues associated with the traditional gift card industry, which heavily relies on plastic. CEO and co-founder Darragh Meaney highlighted this concern, noting that the International Card Manufacturers Association (ICMA) reports approximately 30 billion plastic cards are manufactured globally each year. Alarmingly, over 70% of these gift cards are discarded within six months, contributing to an estimated 53 million tons of plastic waste.
"It is an environmentally wasteful practice that feels totally disconnected from how we live today," Meaney stated.
Further enhancing user experience, On Me's digital cards seamlessly integrate with popular mobile payment systems like Apple Pay and Google Wallet. With the global gift card market projected to reach $2.3 trillion by 2030, On Me believes its innovative approach positions it for substantial growth. Since its launch, the company reports facilitating over $2.5 million in gifts for more than 26,000 users, demonstrating a robust 50% monthly growth rate.
