Instagram is rolling out a significant new feature called “Your Algorithm,” designed to give users unprecedented control over the Reels content they see. Announced on Wednesday, this tool allows individuals to view and actively customize the topics that influence their Reels recommendations, aiming for a more personalized and engaging viewing experience.
How to Access and Customize Your Reels Algorithm
When browsing Reels, users will notice a new icon in the upper right corner, depicted as two lines adorned with hearts. Tapping this icon will open the “Your Algorithm” interface. Here, Instagram presents a summary of topics it believes are most relevant to the user, determined by their activity and processed by AI.
For instance, a user might see a description like: “Lately you’ve been into creativity, sports hype, fitness motivation, and skateboarding.” This summary can even be shared to an Instagram Story, allowing followers to see a snapshot of their interests, much like sharing Spotify Wrapped results.

Below this personalized summary, a detailed list of identified interest topics will appear. Users can then actively select which topics they wish to see more or less of, directly influencing their future Reels recommendations. Furthermore, if a particular interest isn't listed, users have the option to manually type it in and add it to their personalized list.
Following in TikTok's Footsteps, with Enhanced Personalization
This initiative from Instagram mirrors a similar move by competitor TikTok, which introduced its “Manage Topics” feature last year. TikTok’s tool also allows users to tailor their For You feed by indicating preferences for certain topics. However, Instagram’s “Your Algorithm” distinguishes itself by offering a more deeply personalized list of interests and the unique ability to add custom topics, moving beyond TikTok’s more generic category selections.

Availability and Future Expansion
The new Instagram tool is now available in the U.S. as of Wednesday, with a global rollout in English expected soon. Looking ahead, Instagram has indicated plans to extend the “Your Algorithm” functionality beyond Reels, allowing users to personalize their Explore feed and eventually other sections of the app, promising even greater user control over their content experience.
