Instagram has announced a significant update to its platform, implementing a new universal limit of five hashtags per post. This change, rolling out to all users, is part of the social media giant's ongoing efforts to refine content discovery, combat spam and scams, and enhance the overall user experience.
For some time, Instagram has indicated that hashtags no longer hold the same importance for content discovery as they once did. The platform's advanced AI algorithms now play a more prominent role in surfacing relevant content to individual users, diminishing the reliance on broad hashtag usage. However, hashtags still serve a purpose in guiding users toward related content and organizing topics.
The move to a five-hashtag limit follows a year of extensive testing, during which Instagram experimented with various restrictions, including a three-hashtag limit for some users. The company has now finalized its decision, making five hashtags the new standard across the app.
In an official statement shared via Threads, Instagram explained its rationale:
Instagram will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five. We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram.
The platform emphasizes that while targeted, relevant hashtags can still aid in discovery, the new limit aims to prevent misuse and encourage more thoughtful tagging.
This update aligns with Meta's broader perspective on hashtags, particularly evident in the development of its Threads platform, where a much more restrictive approach of one tag per post has been adopted. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has repeatedly articulated that hashtags do not function as effective discovery tools as they once did.
Mosseri's skepticism regarding hashtags as a primary discovery mechanism has been consistent:
- In October 2023, Mosseri said that hashtags would not "meaningfully change the trajectory" of Threads' development.
- Then in late October, Threads rolled out topic tags, enabling users to add one topic to each update to "make it easier for others to find and join in on the conversation."
- By January 2024, Mosseri said that hashtags may be "good to build" for Threads, in line with user requests, but that they wouldn't "noticeably grow Threads or Threads usage."
- In February this year, in a talk about Instagram, Mosseri said that hashtags "don’t work" to increase reach.
- In March this year, Threads added topic tags on profiles to help showcase what users are likely to post about.
- Most recently, in May this year, Mosseri once again said that hashtags "don’t improve visibility on Instagram," but they are "a great way to let people know what a post is about and connect posts."
Ultimately, while many users remain habitual hashtag users, their role has evolved. Instagram's new five-hashtag limit underscores the platform's shift towards AI-driven discovery and a focus on quality over quantity, urging creators to make each tag count.
