Instagram is currently piloting a new feature called "early access Reels," designed to empower creators in growing their follower base. This innovative option allows creators to make their Reels exclusively viewable by their followers for a limited period, incentivizing audience growth and engagement.
Social media expert Lindsey Gamble recently showcased examples of this new "early access Reels" option, which is being rolled out to select creators. The feature allows creators to temporarily lock their Reels, making them accessible only to their existing followers before a wider public release.
"These Reels show a clock with a star icon on the cover in the grid and a blurred cover labeled 'Early Access.' When viewers tap in, they see a message encouraging them to follow the creator to watch the Reel, along with a timer for when the Reel will be available for everyone and a follow button."
This "early access" functionality builds upon Instagram's existing lockable Reels option, introduced in May, which allows creators to share content viewable only with an access code. While the previous feature focused on exclusive access via codes, this new iteration specifically targets audience growth by incentivizing follows.
The primary goal of this latest update is to foster community growth and boost interest in creator content by directly encouraging users to follow for exclusive access. While not a radical overhaul, this feature offers a valuable new avenue for creators to experiment with building hype and converting viewers into dedicated followers. Increased follower counts can lead to greater algorithmic reach and more opportunities for content to appear in users' feeds.
Creators will need to ensure their exclusive "early access" content is compelling enough to warrant a follow, maximizing the feature's potential. Instagram has confirmed that the option is currently in testing with a select group of creators, and further details on a broader rollout are anticipated.
