OpenAI has officially launched group chat functionality for ChatGPT globally, making the collaborative AI feature available to all users across its Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. This significant rollout, announced on Thursday, follows a successful pilot program that began just a week prior in select regions, including Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The company envisions group chats transforming ChatGPT from a one-on-one assistant into a dynamic, shared space where friends, family, or coworkers can collaborate. OpenAI highlights various use cases, such as coordinating trips, co-writing documents, settling debates, or working through research projects. In these scenarios, ChatGPT actively assists by searching for information, summarizing discussions, and comparing options to facilitate collective decision-making.
How ChatGPT Group Chats Work
The new feature allows up to 20 individuals to participate in a single ChatGPT group conversation, provided they accept an invitation. OpenAI emphasizes that personal settings and individual memory within ChatGPT remain private to each user, ensuring data security and personalized experiences within the shared environment.
Initiating a group chat is straightforward: users simply tap the 'people' icon and add participants directly or by sharing a unique link. Each new participant is prompted to set up a brief profile, including their name, username, and a photo. It is important to note that adding someone to an existing chat creates a new conversation instance, leaving the original discussion undisturbed.
Intelligent AI Interaction
OpenAI states that ChatGPT is designed to intelligently discern when to contribute to a group conversation and when to remain silent. Users can explicitly prompt the AI for a response by tagging 'ChatGPT' within the chat. Furthermore, the AI can enhance interactions by reacting to messages with emojis and referencing participants' profile photos, adding a more dynamic and engaging element to the conversation.
OpenAI's Vision for Collaborative AI
This global launch signifies OpenAI's latest strategic move to evolve ChatGPT beyond a simple chatbot into a more comprehensive social and collaborative platform. The company views group chats as merely the initial step towards fostering a truly collaborative environment, shifting from a single-player experience to a multi-user interaction.
“Over time, we see ChatGPT playing a more active role in real group conversations, helping people plan, create, and take action together,” OpenAI shared in an email to TechCrunch.
The announcement also comes on the heels of other significant OpenAI developments. Less than two weeks prior, the company launched GPT-5.1, which introduced both Instant and Thinking versions of the model. Additionally, in September, OpenAI debuted its social app called Sora, a TikTok-style competitor where users can generate and share videos of themselves and their friends.
