Meta has officially rolled out its "Your Algorithm" manual control option for Reels to all users in the United States. Following initial testing with a limited number of users back in October, this new feature empowers users to directly influence their Reels feed, offering a more personalized viewing experience beyond purely AI-driven recommendations.
Users can access this feature by tapping the control icon located at the top right of their Reels feed. This opens the "Your Algorithm" overview, where individuals can add or remove topics of interest. Tapping on a specific interest will also display examples of videos that fall under that category, providing clarity on how selections will shape their feed.
This enhancement aims to give users more direct control over their Reels experience, ensuring that recommendations are less solely dictated by Meta's artificial intelligence systems.
Meta's Head of Instagram, Chris Cox, highlighted the significance of this update on Threads:
"We’re launching the ‘your algorithm’ tool on Reels today in the U.S. and will roll out soon to all English-speaking users – a big step towards a more controllable experience. We’ve done a bunch of work on the tech under the hood and we will continue to refine these tools, but already it’s quite powerful to steer your recommendations towards your specific interests."
While this feature offers users a welcome sense of control, it presents an interesting dynamic for Meta. The company acknowledges that AI-powered recommendations are crucial for driving significantly more activity in its apps, including Reels, and keeping people scrolling for longer periods. Allowing manual interference could, theoretically, impact these engagement metrics.
However, Meta also understands that historically, users often desire such control options more for reassurance than for active use. Past trends with security settings, data protections, and feed preferences show time and again that while users appreciate having the choice, most prefer the system to automatically curate their content. Therefore, the actual risk to Meta's engagement figures from this manual control feature is likely minimal, as widespread adoption of active customization remains to be seen.
Regardless of widespread adoption, the "Your Algorithm" tool offers a new avenue for users to experiment with and potentially enhance their Reels viewing experience. As an added social element, Instagram also allows users to share their algorithm interests to their Stories, letting friends and followers see what topics they're engaging with.
