Reddit is rolling out a new verification system, introducing a distinct grey checkmark for select public figures and trusted partners. This update aims to enhance user trust and streamline identity confirmation on the platform, aligning its verification indicators more closely with other major social media apps.
The new grey checkmark will appear next to usernames, providing visual assurance that users are interacting with the actual person or entity identified in their profile. This initiative is currently in a limited alpha test phase.
Explaining the rationale behind the update, Reddit stated:
“Today, we’re announcing a limited alpha test of verified profiles - an update placing grey checkmarks next to a username - to help individuals and businesses, who wish to do so, confirm their identities on Reddit. This feature is designed to help redditors understand who they're engaging with in moments when verification matters, whether it’s an expert or celebrity hosting an AMA, a journalist reporting news, or a brand sharing information.”
This new grey checkmark system will supersede Reddit's previous "official" badge, which was first introduced in 2023. The "official" tag was also used to confirm the identity of accounts recognized by Reddit. The transition to the grey checkmark aims to provide additional assurance within the app.
While the goal is to provide greater assurance, the broader meaning of verification ticks on social media platforms has become a subject of debate. Historically, these indicators signified real identity and credibility, helping users distinguish confirmed public figures and brands. However, with some platforms now offering checkmarks for a fee, their original significance has arguably diminished. A checkmark can now sometimes indicate financial willingness rather than verified credibility, leading to an erosion of its initial purpose.
Reddit has initiated this update with a small, curated group of individuals—many of whom have already self-identified on the platform—and businesses that previously held an official badge. The company plans for a broader expansion sometime in the future and notes that verified users will have the option to use pseudonyms if they choose, as detailed in their official announcement.
Ultimately, Reddit's new verification system seeks to offer greater clarity and confidence for its users, ensuring they can more easily identify and engage with legitimate entities on the platform.
