TikTok is enhancing its platform with several new accessibility features designed to better support users experiencing neurological, cognitive, and visual sensitivities. These updates aim to make the popular video-sharing app more inclusive and comfortable for a wider audience.
The company already offers a range of accessibility and support tools within the app, providing greater operability for individuals with diverse needs. TikTok is now expanding on these offerings with two key updates targeting vision and cognitive sensitivities.
New Viewing Options for Enhanced Comfort
Disable HDR Video Playback
One significant addition is the option to disable High Dynamic Range (HDR) video playback. This feature will automatically revert all content to Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) viewing. TikTok explains that this provides a more consistent and comfortable viewing experience, particularly for users dealing with light sensitivity and low vision-related issues. For some individuals, the bright and rapidly changing visuals often associated with HDR can induce migraines and other discomforts. This new setting allows users to avoid such concerns and enjoy TikTok videos in a way that suits them best.
Reduce Motion in Video Clips
TikTok is also introducing a setting to reduce motion in video clips. This option is specifically designed to minimize motion-based effects, animations, and transitions that can trigger cognitive and motion sensitivities. With this feature enabled, users can reduce screen transitions and slide-up/slide-down effects, while all interactive elements, such as tooltips, pop-ups, and menus, will remain fully functional.
A Growing Commitment to Accessibility
These new updates are part of TikTok's ongoing commitment to expanding its suite of accessibility options, enabling more people to fully engage with the app. Earlier this year, TikTok also updated its alt-text settings for photos and enhanced text presentation options, alongside variable color contrast, to cater to various accessibility needs.
Furthermore, TikTok launched a new Digital Safety and Privacy Guide, offering comprehensive guidance on how users can improve their privacy, security, and accessibility settings within the platform. With these continuous enhancements, TikTok is building a more supportive environment for its diverse global user base.
