TikTok is rolling out a suite of new features designed to deepen friend connections and foster collaborative discovery within its popular short-form video app. These updates include a "Shared Feed" for personalized content streams, "Shared Collections" for joint content saving, and new digital greeting cards, all aiming to enhance user engagement and social interaction on the platform.

Introducing the Shared Feed

The first major addition is the Shared Feed, a new option that curates a combined stream of recommended content based on the mutual interests of two users. As explained by TikTok, this feature will help friends and family stay connected by surfacing new content tailored to both their tastes, ranging from sports to holiday activities or favorite fashion creators. Each day, users will find a curated selection of 15 videos in their private chat, aligned with their shared interests.

"Shared Feed can help two people stay connected by surfacing new content tailored to both of their tastes, from sports to holiday winter activities and even their favorite fashion creators. Each day, friends and family members will find a curated selection of 15 videos in their private chat aligned with their interests."

This concept bears a strong resemblance to Instagram's "Blend" feature, launched earlier this year, which also aims to boost connection and engagement through shared content discovery. The underlying idea is to provide a more communal alternative to the common practice of sharing individual Reels via direct messages.

Collaborative Content with Shared Collections

Alongside the Shared Feed, TikTok is also introducing Shared Collections. This feature allows friends and family to collaboratively save posts to a joint collection. Whether it's content from favorite creators, inspiration for a home design project, or videos related to a new skill learned together, Shared Collections aim to simplify organization and discovery.

"Whether it's content from their favorite creators, inspiration for a home design project, or a new skill they're learning together, Shared Collection makes it easy for people to stay organized as they discover and save on TikTok. For instance, if a person discovers a festive gift-wrapping video and shares it with a friend on TikTok, they can then save the video and create a Shared Collection to access this video at any time."

Essentially, these function much like collaborative Pinterest boards, but with TikTok videos as the primary content, offering a new way for users to curate and revisit shared interests.

New Digital Greeting Cards

Finally, TikTok is launching new greeting cards within its messaging platform. Users will be able to select seasonal greeting card options and send them to friends in the app. These cards will open with a "festive animation," adding another element of interest and connection, particularly relevant for upcoming holidays.

While neither the Shared Feed nor Shared Collections are entirely novel concepts in the broader social media landscape, they do offer more avenues for creating shared experiences within the TikTok app. However, questions remain about how well these new features truly align with existing user behaviors and preferences on the platform, and if they will significantly alter how people interact and discover content together.
