Hedra Secures $32M in Series A Funding for AI Video Generation
AI-powered talking baby podcasts are the latest viral trend, and Hedra, a web-based video generation and editing platform, is at the forefront. The startup just announced a $32 million Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz's Infrastructure fund, with participation from existing investors. a16z's Matt Bornstein will also join Hedra's board.
Bridging the Gap in AI Video Creation
Founded in 2023, Hedra offers a unique approach to AI video generation. CEO Michael Lingelbach saw a gap between platforms like Synthesia, used for AI avatar presentations, and tools like Runway, designed for short-form video clips. Hedra combines the best of both worlds, focusing on AI-generated characters with long dialogues and advanced controllability. Its Character-3 model, launched in March, has been a key driver of user growth.

Powering the Talking Baby Podcast Trend
Hedra's technology is behind the rise of viral talking baby podcasts, where AI-generated characters discuss everyday life. While the exact impact of this trend on Hedra's growth is unclear, the company has attracted significant investor interest. Following a $10 million seed round from Index Ventures, Abstract Ventures, and a16z speedrun, Amazon's Alexa Fund also invested earlier this year.
Investing in the Future of AI Characters
Hedra plans to use the new funding to train its next-generation model, offering even greater customization and enabling AI characters to interact with users. The company is currently focused on attracting creators and prosumers, but has also seen interest from enterprise marketing departments.

A Competitive Landscape
Hedra faces competition from other AI video platforms like Captions, Cheehoo, Synthesia, and HeyGen. However, Hedra claims its characters are more expressive. The platform integrates with other models like Veo 2 and Kling for video, Flux, Imagen3, Sana, and Ideogram V2 for images, and ElevenLabs and Cartesia for audio.
“AI companies can produce amazing clips of environments and simple actions. But they can’t generate meaningful dialogue or animation. It’s not just about making a video, it’s about making a story that resonates. This is largely down to the people and characters in the story. That’s exactly what Hedra is building,” said Matt Bornstein of a16z.
