Collibra Acquires Raito to Boost Data Access Control
Brussels-based data governance platform Collibra has acquired Raito, a data access startup, also based in Brussels. This strategic move enhances Collibra's offerings in the face of growing AI and automation demands.
Founded in 2021, Raito specializes in managing internal data access for employees and customers. Collibra's acquisition comes as data access management becomes increasingly complex for enterprises.
Addressing the Growing Need for Data Access Control
Collibra CEO Felix Van de Maele highlighted the escalating challenges of data access management in the era of AI agents and automated workflows. Traditional approaches, he explained, are no longer sufficient due to their manual and static nature.
“We heard from our customers and large organizations that managing data access at scale has become a really big problem. That’s why the traditional approaches just don’t scale anymore. They’re too brittle. They’re manual workflows, [based on] static policies.”
Collibra's existing product, Collibra Protect, focuses primarily on data privacy. The integration of Raito's technology will strengthen and automate Collibra's data access control capabilities.
While other companies like SailPoint and SecureAuth offer data access tools, Van de Maele emphasized Raito's cloud-native architecture and suitability for the current AI landscape as key factors in the acquisition decision. The fact that Raito was founded by former Collibra employees further facilitated the integration.
“We also [were] looking for teams that want to continue to build, right? It’s not the end for this. It is just really the beginning of this journey.”
Consolidating Data Governance in the Age of AI
This acquisition follows a trend of data companies consolidating to address data governance gaps in the face of rapid AI innovation. Recent examples include Salesforce's intent to acquire Informatica, as well as acquisitions by Alation and ServiceNow.
Van de Maele noted that the rise of AI has exposed the fragmentation of data stacks, a consequence of numerous single-point data solutions entering the market over the past decade. He believes that integrating Raito into Collibra's unified governance platform will help address this fragmentation.
Founded in 2008, Collibra has become a prominent player in the data governance sector, raising nearly $600 million in venture capital. The company serves major enterprises like Heineken, Credit Suisse, and SAP.
