Snowflake Acquires Crunchy Data to Enhance Postgres Offerings

Snowflake, the cloud data platform, has announced its acquisition of Crunchy Data, a prominent Postgres database provider. While the financial terms remain undisclosed, sources estimate the deal to be worth approximately $250 million.

This acquisition strengthens Snowflake's data cloud capabilities and aligns with the growing trend of tech companies investing in data startups to enhance their AI offerings. Recent examples include Salesforce's acquisition of Informatica, Alation's purchase of Numbers Station, and ServiceNow's acquisition of Data.World.

Expanding Postgres Capabilities for the Snowflake Data Cloud

Crunchy Data provides tools for building with Postgres, a popular open-source, object-relational database management system. The company boasts a strong client base, including UPS, SAS, Moneytree, and public sector organizations like the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

This acquisition will enable Snowflake to launch Snowflake Postgres, an enterprise-grade PostgreSQL database for its customers and partners like Blue Yonder and LandingAI. This move further enhances Snowflake's database offerings in the growing age of AI.

Snowflake Postgres will soon be available in private preview.

Strengthening Snowflake's Data and AI Platform

“Our vision is to deliver the world’s most trusted and comprehensive data and AI platform to our customers,” said Vivek Raghunathan, SVP of engineering at Snowflake. “Today’s announcement of our proposed acquisition of Crunchy Data represents another reason why Snowflake is the ultimate destination for all enterprise data and AI needs. We’re tackling a massive $350 billion market opportunity and a real need for our customers to bring Postgres to the Snowflake AI Data Cloud.”

This acquisition builds upon Snowflake's previous efforts to integrate with Postgres. In 2024, Snowflake launched new connectors for PostgreSQL and MySQL. Snowflake also acquired data management company Datavolo last year.

This strategic move positions Snowflake to better serve its customers' growing data and AI needs.
