Discord Aims to Solve Information Overload with New Features
Discord, now entering its second decade, is evolving its platform to address information overload. The popular communication platform, known for its real-time chat servers, recognizes the need for more structured communication.
While Discord has revolutionized online communities, the rapid-fire nature of its chat can overwhelm users with unread messages and bury crucial information. Traditional forums offer a more organized approach, which Discord now aims to incorporate.
Structured Knowledge Sharing and AI Summarization
According to The Verge, Discord's SVP of Product, Peter Sellis, acknowledges the need for better knowledge sharing. The company is exploring forum-like features to provide a more structured environment for discussions.
Discord wants to work on features that are “more amicable to structured knowledge sharing, like forums, that we could probably do a better job of investing in.”
Another potential solution involves leveraging AI. Discord is considering using Large Language Models (LLMs) to summarize lengthy conversations, making them easier to share and digest. However, Sellis admits that finding the right AI solution remains a challenge.
With a new CEO and an impending IPO, Discord is poised for significant updates. These changes aim to enhance user experience and solidify Discord's position as a leading online communication platform.
