LinkedIn Removes Custom Profile Link Feature
LinkedIn is removing the custom call-to-action (CTA) link option from user profiles, previously a Premium subscriber feature. While existing custom links will remain visible on profiles, users will no longer be able to add new links or modify existing ones.
According to LinkedIn:
At LinkedIn, we constantly evaluate our features to add value for members and customers. We may upgrade or eliminate offerings to invest in the most valuable features. We no longer support adding new profile links. Any previously added custom link will remain in the top card, but if removed, you won't be able to add a new one.
This means if you have an existing CTA button, it will stay active. However, you cannot change it, and if removed, the option disappears. Users without a custom link will no longer be able to add one.
Impact on Premium Subscribers
This change impacts a significant portion of LinkedIn's user base, as Premium subscriptions have reportedly grown 50% over the last two years, reaching approximately 175 million paying subscribers. This growth is partly attributed to the successful launch of Premium Company Pages, which feature prominent custom CTA buttons. These buttons have proven effective, with LinkedIn reporting over 10x more clicks on average for Premium Company Pages.
While LinkedIn hasn't officially stated the reason for this removal, speculation suggests it may be due to low usage, a focus on keeping users within the platform, and quality control over external links.
The removal of this feature raises questions about its impact on creators, whom LinkedIn has been actively courting. The custom link offered a valuable way for creators to drive traffic to external resources.
This change contrasts with LinkedIn's emphasis on custom CTA buttons for Premium Company Pages, highlighting the platform's focus on business users. The increased visibility and effectiveness of these buttons for businesses underscore the potential value lost for individual users with this update.
