Threads Tests Standalone Accounts Without Instagram

Threads is testing a new feature that allows users in the EU to create accounts without an Instagram login. This marks a significant step towards platform independence.

App researcher Radu Oncescu shared screenshots showcasing this new functionality. Select EU users can now create a Threads profile using an email address or phone number, bypassing the Instagram login requirement. See the screenshots here.

Meta confirmed this test is currently limited to some users within the EU. This suggests wider availability may be coming soon.

Moving Towards Independence

This change allows users to establish a separate Threads presence with a unique username, independent of their Instagram account. This move builds upon previous efforts to separate the platforms. In November, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the removal of Instagram graph data from Threads onboarding. This means Instagram followings no longer dictate initial Threads recommendations. While Threads still uses Instagram's graph for some post recommendations, this reliance is gradually decreasing. The ultimate goal is for Threads to function as a distinct entity rather than an Instagram extension.

A Positive Shift for Users

This separation is a positive development. User interests and engagement patterns on Threads likely differ from those on Instagram. Recommendations based on Instagram activity may not align with what users seek from a real-time, text-based platform.

Threads is evolving towards a model similar to X (formerly Twitter), focusing on up-to-the-minute updates and real-time conversations. This independent approach seems to be the app's strategic direction, moving away from being a mere Instagram add-on.

With over 350 million users and growing, Threads is showing strong growth. This move towards platform independence, coupled with Meta's reevaluation of its political content stance (read more here), positions Threads for continued success.
