Uber Fuels WeRide Robotaxi Expansion with $100M Investment
Uber is deepening its partnership with Chinese autonomous vehicle company WeRide, investing $100 million to expand their robotaxi service. This expansion targets 15 new cities over the next five years, following their successful launch in Abu Dhabi.
The investment is expected to be finalized by the second half of 2025. The expansion will focus on cities outside of China and the United States, including locations in Europe. WeRide's robotaxi service is accessible through the Uber app.
Partnership Mirrors Uber's Waymo Collaboration
This partnership mirrors Uber's existing collaboration with Waymo. Uber manages network routing and fleet operations, while WeRide provides the autonomous vehicle technology. This model allows both companies to leverage their respective strengths.
WeRide recently went public on the Nasdaq. In addition to Abu Dhabi, the two companies operate in Dubai and plan further expansion.
Uber's Growing Robotaxi Network
Uber has established over 15 partnerships with various autonomous vehicle companies in recent years. These partnerships span ride-hailing, delivery, and trucking services. Recent deals include collaborations with May Mobility, Volkswagen, and Momenta.
Uber's most prominent U.S. partnership is with Waymo. Their joint "Waymo on Uber" service currently operates in Austin and will soon launch in Atlanta.
