Zoox Brings Self-Driving Car Testing to Atlanta
Amazon's autonomous vehicle division, Zoox, is expanding its testing program to Atlanta, Georgia. The company will begin mapping roads and collecting data, a crucial step before deploying its self-driving vehicles and eventually launching its robotaxi service.
Atlanta Marks Zoox's Seventh Testing City
Atlanta becomes the seventh U.S. city where Zoox is testing its autonomous vehicles. This announcement comes shortly after Waymo and Uber launched their early access robotaxi service in Atlanta, with plans for a full public launch this summer.
Zoox's Methodical Approach to Robotaxi Deployment
Zoox is taking a phased approach to rolling out its robotaxi service. Initially, the company will use modified Toyota Highlanders to map the city's roads and gather data on traffic signals and other infrastructure. After this initial data collection phase, Zoox will begin testing its autonomous vehicle technology.
Zoox has already progressed to testing its purpose-built robotaxi without a safety driver in Foster City and San Francisco, California, as well as in Las Vegas, Nevada. The company aims to offer public rides in San Francisco and Las Vegas by the end of the year.
Addressing Software Challenges
Zoox has been actively refining its autonomous vehicle technology and addressing software issues. The company issued recalls in March and May related to software updates designed to fix problems encountered during testing.
