Digital artist Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, has once again captured the art world's attention with his latest installation, "Regular Animals," at Art Basel Miami Beach. The project, featuring robotic dogs adorned with hyper-realistic heads of cultural icons and even Beeple himself, saw his self-portrait dog sell first, a surprising turn for the artist.
The "Regular Animals" exhibit showcases several $100,000 robotic dogs, each uniquely fitted with hyper-realistic heads depicting figures like tech moguls Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, alongside art legends Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. These sophisticated robot dogs traverse a contained plexiglass environment, using chest-mounted cameras to capture images. These visuals are then processed by artificial intelligence, ultimately resulting in physical prints, which, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, are "essentially pooped out." A unique twist for collectors: 256 of these prints contain QR codes, granting access to a complimentary NFT, presented in playfully labeled "Excrement Sample" bags.
In a move he personally described as "ballsy," the Charleston-based artist also included his own likeness among the distinguished heads. Remarkably, the robotic dog bearing Beeple's self-portrait was the first to be acquired, a development that, according to his interview with the Journal, even caught the artist off guard.
This installation marks at least the second instance of Winkelmann commanding the art world's spotlight. Four years prior, his monumental digital collage fetched an astonishing $69 million at Christie's, a sale that significantly propelled the NFT boom, which subsequently peaked a year later before experiencing a substantial downturn.
