Amazon has recently launched the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, a premium 11-inch e-ink tablet designed for users who prioritize annotating e-books and documents, highlighting key passages, and taking handwritten notes. While its vibrant color display and advanced features are appealing, its starting price of $629.99 makes it a significant investment, likely justifiable only for a specific niche of dedicated users. For most, the cost of this writeable color e-ink tablet will be a difficult hurdle to overcome.

However, for those already considering the 11-inch, $549.99 Kindle Scribe (which offers a paper-like display but no color), the additional investment for the Colorsoft version might be worthwhile. Both the Scribe and Scribe Colorsoft are positioned as luxury items compared to more affordable options like the traditional Kindle ($110) or Kindle Paperwhite ($160).

The Fig color version, announced in December, began shipping on January 28, 2026, and is available for $679.99 with 64GB of storage. Amazon aims to carve out a distinct segment in the tablet market with these enhanced Kindle devices, placing them in competition with e-ink tablets like reMarkable, rather than other Kindles. However, high-end e-ink readers with pens are unlikely to attract a massive audience, especially when compared to the versatility of an iPad, which offers extensive capabilities for streaming, drawing, productivity, and thousands of apps.

Designed for a Niche Audience

The Scribe Colorsoft is tailored for a very specific demographic: e-book readers and professionals who frequently interact with documents. Students and researchers, along with anyone who regularly needs to mark up files, will find this device particularly useful. Individuals interested in maintaining to-do lists or a personal journal might also appreciate its features, though daily use would be essential to justify its premium price point.

Display and Performance

The device offers an intuitive user experience, featuring a Home screen similar to other Kindles, providing quick access to notes, libraries, and even suggestions for interactive books like Sudoku or drawing guides. Library titles and book recommendations are displayed in color, enhancing discoverability.

According to Amazon, this newer 2025 model boasts a 40% speed improvement for page turns and writing. Our testing confirmed its responsiveness, with snappy page transitions and a fluid writing experience. Despite its 11-inch screen, the Scribe Colorsoft is remarkably thin and light, measuring 5.4mm (0.21 inches) and weighing 400g (0.88 pounds). This makes it highly portable, easily fitting into a bag without the bulk of a typical tablet. Notably, the Scribe Colorsoft features a consistent bezel size around the screen, a design improvement over its predecessor.

The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft's glare-free, oxide-based e-ink display features a textured surface that closely mimics the feel of writing on paper. This design choice aids users transitioning from traditional pen-and-paper note-taking to a digital format. It also contributes to exceptional battery life, with the device lasting up to eight weeks on a single charge.

The display intelligently adapts its brightness to ambient lighting conditions, and users can adjust the screen's warmth for comfortable nighttime reading. While it is a touchscreen, it exhibits a slight lag compared to LCD or OLED touchscreens found on devices like the iPad, particularly noticeable during gestures such as pinching to resize fonts.

Pen Experience and Document Management

The included Premium Pen offers several advantages and some trade-offs. Unlike the Apple Pencil, it requires no charging, which is a significant convenience. Designed to replicate the feel of writing on paper, it glides smoothly across the screen. However, its rounded design lacks the flat side for charging and grip found on the Apple Pencil, making it potentially prone to slipping.

Amazon's design also necessitates periodic replacement of pen tips, which wear down with use. A 10-pack costs around $17, adding another ongoing maintenance item for users. The device supports 10 different pen colors and five highlight colors, allowing for colorful and organized notes and annotations.

Users can select between various writing tools, including a standard pen, fountain pen, marker, or pencil, each with different stroke widths. A favorite pen tool can be set as a shortcut via the pen's side button, which can also be disabled if accidentally triggered by a tight grip. The writing experience feels natural, and while the e-ink display's colors are muted, they are functional for its intended purpose. The Scribe Colorsoft excels at writing, note-taking, and highlighting, though it's not ideal for digital art despite its new shader tool.

From the Kindle's Home screen, users can quickly jot down thoughts using the Quick Notes feature or create organized Notebooks from the Workspace tab. The Notebook function offers a wide array of templates, including blank, ruled, meeting notes, Cornell notes, legal pad, college rule, storyboards, habit trackers, planners, music sheets, graph paper, checklists, and more.

An intuitive feature allows users to erase by simply flipping the pen over, much like a traditional pencil. A precision erasing tool with adjustable widths is also available. Due to the e-ink screen, a faint "ghost" of erased content may sometimes remain, though it fades over time. A Lasso tool is also available for selecting, moving, copying, pasting, or resizing elements, though it may see less use from casual note-takers.

For extensive annotators, the Active Canvas feature is particularly useful. When writing directly into a Word document or e-book, Active Canvas intelligently creates space, causing the surrounding text to wrap around the note. This note remains anchored to its original text reference, even if the font size is adjusted, promoting better organization.

Furthermore, in documents with expandable margins, users can tap an icon to take notes directly within the margin, rather than on the main page.

A Kindle with AI Capabilities

The new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft integrates several AI tools and features to enhance the user experience. These include automatic neatening of scribbles and straightening of highlights and underlines. While generally effective, the highlighting function occasionally caused the review unit to freeze, though it recovered after returning to the Home screen.

A new AI feature, accessible via a sparkle icon, allows users to summarize text and refine their handwriting. Interestingly, the handwriting refinement doesn't convert notes to a typed font but offers a selection of handwritten fonts (Cadia, Florio, Sunroom, Notewright) for customization. While the AI can decipher even poor handwriting, it sometimes struggles when multiple scribbles are present on the same page. This feature is a welcome addition for those who prefer the tactile experience of handwriting but desire a cleaner digital output.

The AI search feature can scan across all notebooks to locate specific notes or identify connections between them. Users can input search queries via an on-screen keyboard or by handwriting, which is then converted to text. The "Ask Notebooks AI" feature allows for interactive querying of notes, providing AI-powered insights.

Amazon plans to introduce additional AI features soon, including an "Ask this Book" function. This will allow users to highlight a passage and receive spoiler-free answers to questions about character motives, scene significance, or plot details. Another upcoming feature, "Story So Far," will help users catch up on a book after a break, again without revealing spoilers.
