Instagram is rolling out a significant update to its Reels camera, introducing an extended 20-minute recording capability and a suite of enhanced editing tools. These improvements aim to streamline in-app content creation, making it easier for users to capture and refine their videos directly within the platform.
The most notable change is the expansion of recording time, allowing users to capture Reels up to 20 minutes long directly through the in-app camera. This feature is designed to simplify the process of creating longer-form video content for on-the-go posting.
As explained by Instagram:
“The Instagram Design Team has been hard at work addressing your feedback and identifying key areas for improvement, in collaboration with our product and research teams. From customizable touch-ups to longer Reels, our new camera has better usability and new features to help you create your next Reel.”
Instagram highlights this 20-minute recording extension as a way to foster “more creative freedom and longer storytelling.”
However, creators should note Instagram's continued emphasis on shorter video content. The platform has consistently indicated that its algorithm prioritizes Reels under three minutes for broader distribution and recommendations. While the option to post longer videos now exists, their reach might be limited compared to shorter clips, which Instagram identifies as key drivers of engagement.
Beyond the extended recording time, Instagram has also refined its in-app editing capabilities. Users will find a simplified “Undo” option for easier multi-clip editing, allowing quick removal of the last recorded segment from their project.
The “Touch-Up” feature now includes a new slider for intensity control, offering more precise video adjustments. Additionally, the green screen experience has been updated, and the time and countdown tools have been improved for greater usability.
These comprehensive updates are designed to enhance the in-app creation and editing experience for Reels. For more advanced or specialized video editing needs, Instagram also offers its dedicated Edits app, which provides a broader array of tools and customization options.
