Delta Emulator Integrates Patreon, Bypassing Apple Fees

Game emulator Delta has updated its iOS app to directly link to its Patreon page. This allows users to subscribe and support the developers without Apple taking a cut of the subscription fees.

This change follows a recent court ruling that forced Apple to allow apps to link to external payment options. Previously, Apple took a commission on all in-app purchases, including subscriptions. This new update allows Delta to offer its Patreon membership directly to users, providing access to exclusive features and perks for a $3 monthly fee.

A New Monetization Model for App Developers

Delta's move demonstrates a new monetization strategy for app developers. By leveraging platforms like Patreon, developers can retain a larger share of their revenue. This is particularly beneficial for smaller, independent developers who often struggle with Apple's 30% commission.

Other companies like Spotify, Amazon Kindle, and Patreon itself have also updated their iOS apps to offer external payment links following the court ruling.

While Delta still offers in-app purchases through Apple's system, this option is less prominent within the app's settings. Delta creator Riley Testut celebrated the change, stating on social media, "We can now freely mention our Patreon without giving Apple 27% of donations. Goodbye scare screens!" The "scare screens" refer to the warnings Apple previously required for external payment links.

Impact on the App Store Ecosystem

This shift in policy could potentially revitalize the indie app development scene. With more control over their monetization, smaller developers may find it easier to thrive on the App Store.

Delta's successful implementation of this new payment method suggests that other Patreon-supported apps may soon follow suit. This could mark a significant change in the App Store ecosystem, offering more flexibility and control for both developers and users.
