Gemini AI Now Auto-Summarizes Your Gmail Emails

Google's Gemini AI is enhancing Gmail with automatic email summarization. Summary cards will appear at the top of long emails, providing key points at a glance.

Previously, Gemini offered summarization as a manual option within Gmail's side panel. This update automates the process, streamlining email workflows. The AI will also update the summary as replies arrive.

This feature highlights the growing integration of AI into everyday applications. However, AI-generated summaries have faced accuracy challenges in the past, as seen with Apple's now-paused news notification summaries and Google's own AI Overviews for Search.

Google emphasizes that manual summarization remains available via a button at the top of the email and in the Gemini side panel. The feature currently supports English emails only.

Availability and Control

Depending on your region, automatic summarization may be enabled or disabled by default. Users can manage this feature in Gmail's settings under "Smart features." Workplace admins can also control these settings through the Admin console. For users in the EU, UK, Switzerland, and Japan, smart features, including this one, are turned off by default.

While this feature promises increased productivity, its accuracy and reliability will be key to its success. Google's ongoing development of Gemini will likely address these concerns as the technology evolves.
