Tesla Refocuses Robotaxi Trademark Strategy

Tesla has filed new trademark applications for "Tesla Robotaxi" after encountering obstacles with previous filings for "Robotaxi" and "Cybercab." The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) requested further details for the "Robotaxi" application due to its generic nature and use by other companies like Waymo. The "Cybercab" application was halted due to similar trademark attempts involving the term "Cyber."

These new applications specifically target the phrase "Tesla Robotaxi" and cover:

  • Tesla's autonomous ride-hailing service
  • The associated mobile app
  • The self-driving vehicles themselves

The applications were submitted as Tesla prepares to begin testing its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. However, the review process typically takes several months.

Other Trademark Applications

Tesla also has pending trademark applications for "Robobus," "Robus," and "Cyberbus," likely related to the van-like concept vehicle unveiled last October alongside the Cybercab prototype. During the unveiling, CEO Elon Musk referred to the vehicle as the "Robovan." However, that term is already trademarked by Starship, an Estonian robotic delivery company.

While the "Tesla Robotaxi" trademark applications demonstrate a renewed effort to secure intellectual property rights, their approval remains uncertain. The USPTO's final decision will significantly impact Tesla's branding and marketing strategy for its autonomous ride-hailing ambitions.
