WhatsApp Expands Voice Chat to All Groups

WhatsApp has launched voice chat for all groups, enabling real-time audio conversations within existing communities. This feature builds on previous functionality for larger groups (32-256 participants) and now extends to groups of all sizes.

This move echoes the audio-social trend popularized by apps like Clubhouse. While audio-only social platforms have seen fluctuating popularity, WhatsApp integrates this feature directly into its messaging service, offering a more seamless experience.

How it Works

Starting a voice chat is simple:

  • Go to the bottom of your group chat.
  • Swipe up and hold for a few seconds.

Starting a voice chat does not ring or notify group members. Participants can join and leave the conversation at any time. The voice chat remains pinned at the bottom of the chat for easy access to controls. New members can see who is already participating and join when they choose.

Whether it's a live event, family catch-up, or breaking news, sometimes you need to talk it out in real-time. Voice chat lets you connect live over audio without leaving your group chat or switching to a separate call.

WhatsApp believes this feature will enhance group engagement by facilitating spontaneous conversations and closer connections. This update is rolling out to all groups this week.
