Snapchat, traditionally known for its focus on private, ephemeral messaging, is now venturing into public discourse with the launch of its new Topic Chats feature. This significant update allows users to engage in open conversations about a wide array of subjects, from global events to niche community interests like Formula 1 or popular reality TV shows such as "Below Deck." The move marks a strategic shift for the social media platform, aiming to foster broader community interaction while integrating robust privacy and safety measures.

Despite this pivot to public engagement, Snapchat emphasizes that user privacy remains a core priority. Profiles will stay private to anyone outside a user's friend list, effectively preventing unsolicited friend requests or direct messages. While a user's display name will be visible alongside their messages within a Topic Chat, others will not be able to tap through to their profile. Crucially, display names, unlike usernames, cannot be used to search for individuals on the platform, adding an extra layer of privacy.

To ensure a safe and appropriate environment, Snapchat will employ advanced LLM technology and other safety protocols for moderating Topic Chats. All messages must adhere strictly to Snapchat’s Community Guidelines, and users are empowered to report any inappropriate content. The company has stated it will take decisive action against policy violators, including issuing warnings and blocking accounts.

The new feature also aims to enhance social discovery. Users will be able to see which Topic Chats their friends have joined, a mechanism designed to help individuals easily identify and connect over shared interests.

Beyond text-based discussions, Topic Chats will seamlessly integrate with Snapchat’s Spotlight feature, surfacing relevant short-form videos similar to those found on TikTok. This integration enriches the conversational experience by providing visual context and related content.

The inspiration for Topic Chats stemmed from the vibrant public discussions observed within Spotlight comments, previously the only avenue for public interaction on the platform. Snapchat recognized a strong community desire for more structured public conversation spaces. The company noted in a blog post, "Snapchatters create billions of Snaps every day, sharing moments with friends and family, and as we’ve expanded services like Spotlight, we’ve also found that the Snapchat community loves commenting publicly about trending topics and events."

Topic Chats are set to roll out to users in Canada, New Zealand, and the U.S. over the coming weeks. Users will discover these new chatrooms through various entry points, including Chat shortcuts, search results, the Stories page, and directly on Spotlight videos. A prominent yellow "Join the Chat" button on a Story or Spotlight will indicate an available chatroom. Snapchat has also confirmed that messages sent within Topic Chats will be retained for up to five years.
